Hideki Sugimotoi WAX SCULPTURES
2004.5.17 - 6.5
I have never known of this man, who creates wax figures that make us feel very unpleasant. It makes one wonder;
why on earth I have decided to do an exhibition of his work, when I could have just left him alone to go about his own
business?
Sugimoto uses a technique of his own; carving, painting,
then transplanting human hair into the wax figures. The
displeasing, almost sickening appearance of the sculptures may
express a sense of hatred, that may surprisingly be similar
to some of our daily emotions.
From his earliest work from 1991 to four new pieces, the
exhibition will also feature various photographs of these
sculptures taken by Suzuki Risaku.
