Disease, Malformation and Plastic Surgery -The Case in 1890, Japan

1999.10.4 - 10.23

We found a small old box, filled with what seemed like fantasy. 356 photographs forgotten in the dust clouds of history. The only trace of its identity was that an Oota Photo Studio in Okayama prefecture had done the job, and by the inscriptions on the box that it had been owned by an Ochi Ikkaku. After 8 days of touring every Photo Studio and library in Okayama, we came across a medical magazine, under a layer of more dust. We were surprised to find etchings of the same images as the photographs published in the magazine. We learned that these photographed were taken as a part of research material recording nose implants and rare cases of disease. These images were exhibited in Winterthr Museum of Art, Switzerland. Scalo Publishing has published a book.
